$91 Million Returned to MT Homeowners – Deadline in 2 Weeks

Less than 2 Weeks Remain to Apply – December 31st Deadline

HELENA, MT – December 18, 2007 – The State of Montana has returned over $91 million in property tax refunds to Montana homeowners so far, Governor Brian Schweitzer announced today “But there are still folks who qualify and need to apply before the December 31st deadline.”

“Everywhere I go across Montana, people tell me stories about how they spent their $400 tax rebate,” said Governor Schweitzer. “From fixing the roof to new clothes for the kids, Montanans are spending their rebates in Montana, further keeping our economy on the move.”

232,091 homeowners have been issued a refund for a total of $91,360,825. There are an estimated 254,000 homeowners eligible. 91.4% of eligible homeowners have already claimed their refund.

The deadline to apply is Dec 31st. Homeowners can apply on line or file a paper application. After Dec 31st a homeowner would have to prove that a hardship condition existed that prevented them from applying.

To qualify for the refund, you must meet the statutory requirements, which include:

1) You had to be the owner of residential property in 2006.
2) You had to live in the property as your principal residence for at least 7 months during 2006.
3) You had to pay 2006 property taxes.

You must meet all three requirements to qualify for the refund.

In particular, the Department of Revenue is reminding Montana’s farm and ranch families that they may qualify for the $400 property tax refund, even if their homes are owned as a family business. Provisions in the law allow members of family farm and ranch corporations who own at least 20% of the corporation to qualify, if they meet the residency requirement.

There are several ways to get an application form. Property owners may submit a refund claim online at mt.gov/revenue. In addition, there is a downloadable application form on the website that can be printed and mailed to the department. Paper application forms also are available at county treasurers’ offices, local Department of Revenue offices and larger public libraries.
