Bullock Announces Grant for Emergency Repairs of Apartment Building in Glendive

-

HELENA – June 27, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Montana Governor Steve Bullock today announced a $250,000 grant to the City of Glendive for emergency repairs that residents of a senior living facility are facing. Local officials reported that fire sprinklers at the building broke in April. Further investigation uncovered that the cause of the problem were the clay soils under the building giving way. The architect, general contractor, engineer, and hydrologist have since determined that repairs need to be made to save the building.

Department of Commerce officials and the Bullock administration moved quickly to find funding for the project. The grant, which comes from the Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG), will fund needed repairs of Makoshika Estates senior living apartments.

“This grant will allow the needed repairs of Makoshika Estates to happen and not displace residents,” Bullock said. “I want to thank local and state officials for moving quickly to address these important infrastructure needs.”

The building, which has 18 units, is fully occupied. Some residents may have to be displaced if the current situation is not addressed. The following work needs to be done immediately to save the building, at an estimated cost of $250,000:

Site grading to correct slopes;
Addressing adjacent, off-site storm water drainage;

Installation of one or more sump pumps to control water table level;

Foundation improvements; and,
Other external improvements, including the paving of parking lots.

“The City of Glendive and Makoshika Estates very much appreciate the grant money,” Jerry Jimison, the Mayor of Glendive said. “The fact that low-income elderly people will not be displaced is a huge positive for Glendive since housing in such high demand. We are looking forward to putting the grant money to good use.”

The apartment building is owned through a partnership of Mountain Plains Equity, Dawson County Economic Development Council and ACTION for Eastern Montana.
